Cinema, the most sought-after cultural product of the last century, is now on the verge of being marginalized in the battle for public attention. No one can imagine how we are going to “spiritually inhabit” the next five years, given the rapid cultural shift of the times. However, why is the art of cinema important? If human existence cannot be separated from storytelling, no matter how long, short, fast or slow the form is, how will technology refresh our sense of existence?
In this issue of Film Club, Anson and Joyce will talk about the dramatic changes in cultural life: from Charlie Chaplin in the silent era to iShowSpeed, contrasting the Neffy TV series Adolescence with the Hong Kong movie Papa, and trying to understand the battle between “story” and “emotion” presented by online streaming media. Finally, we will return to art cinema and share some of the classics that have changed our understanding of the world. See you in the theater.
