The huge influx of outsiders into Guangzhou to earn a living after the reform and opening-up made a profound impact on the longstanding Lingnan culture. Knitting, directed by northerner Yin Lichuan, has a unique representativeness in the films that showcase the new Guangzhou culture – a mixture of the north and the south.
Chen Jin, a southern guy, and Li Daping, a northern lady, lived together and ran a mini-bus business. An accident caused Daping a miscarriage. When she was resting at home, Haili, a Sichuan woman suddenly came and got an upper hand in the relationships among the three. But Jin and Haili got into trouble as they had manufactured fake vinegar. After the latter disappeared, Jin and Daping got back together. He also fled after trying to break the law to raise fund for their wedding. Disappointed Daping went for abortion and found Haili in front of her…

YIN Lichuan
Graduated from Beijing University, YIN Lichuan has published several volumes of novel, essay and poem before moving to film writing and directing. Her first film Garden was nominated for Best Director at the 26th Golden Rooster Award. Knitting was shown in the Director’s Fortnights at the 61th Cannes Film Festival and other international film festivals.
