Allen FONG’s unique, uncompromising creativity was already apparent in his debut feature, seeking to update the humanistic realism of 1950s and 60s Cantonese cinema by infusing updated film techniques into the enduringly touching of storytelling. The New Wave director draws on his personal experience growing up in a working-class family, his perceptive portrayal of day-to-day life and personal relationships evoking the collective memories of a whole generation.
The abundant use of location shoots and the realistic sets evoke the everyday environs of ordinary folks, providing also a tracking record of the social changes and economic developments of Hong Kong in the 1960s through the early 80s.
Director Bio:
Allen FONG
A native of Huiyang, Guangdong, Allen Fong was born in Hong Kong. After graduating from the Department of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist College, he furthered his studies at the University of Georgia in the US, majoring in broadcasting, film and television. Upon obtaining his Master’s degree in film production at the University of Southern California, Fong returned to Hong Kong in 1975. He directed many episodes of Below the Lion Rock, including The Wild Child (1977) and Ode to Un Chau Chai (1977), both of which depicted the living environment of the grassroots and received rave reviews.
