Theme: The Aesthetics of Masculinity, 'Film' to the Max
This edition of Chat About Films Club 2.0 explores the aesthetics of masculinity—that element which once drew countless audiences into cinemas to experience blood-pumping thrills. Whenever terms like 'fiery youth', 'heroic spirit', or 'lone assassin' are mentioned, certain iconic keywords inevitably spring to mind. Hollywood's tough-guy myths, Europe's stoic rogues, Hong Kong's chivalrous brothers... "Masculinity" transcends mere gender traits; it embodies an aesthetic style deeply intertwined with the spirit of its era.
In this era where such "masculine" action has been scarce, we invited Hong Kong film critic Dr Lam Hon-kwong to share his collection themed around "masculine" aesthetics: from Ford's Western cowboys to Scorsese's mob godfathers, then to the uniquely cool masculinity of Europe's Léon and Melville, finally returning to Hong Kong to explore the violent aesthetics of King Hu, John Woo's respective interpretations of violent aesthetics through martial arts and gunplay. We trace masculinity on the silver screen while dissecting bodily landscapes and societal shifts. This issue's focus on macho action cinema promises to be utterly thrilling. We look forward to seeing you at the cinema!
