【Talk】The Emotional Landscapes of Tropical Reverie
What kind of resonance do emotions evoke within the cinematic worlds of Southeast Asia? Emotion is like a plant cultivated by the individual, society, and culture - rooted in specific soil, unfolding across heterogeneous times and spaces. Cinema, in turn, allows these emotions to connect and resonate. Before experiencing the absurd estrangement of 6ixtynin9, this talk will draw on a selection of Southeast Asian classics spanning half a century to explore emotional narratives shaped by flux and discipline: the distorted paternal love in In the Wink of an Eye, the childhood bond in Manila in the Claws of Light, the tender cross-class affection in The Scent of Green Papaya, the pure cross-ethnic love in Mukhsin, and the solitary tragedy in Mee Pok Man. The cruelty and tenderness of love remain a universal, ultimate question. We invite you to step into this tropical reverie and feel the emotional temperature of Southeast Asia.
