Inside the frame is the cinema; outside the frame is life, and the dream-makers who bring it to light.
In Macao’s emerging film industry, an equally young generation of crews remains the bedrock of every frame of our local work. Following “Freeze the Moments – Akimoto Chan Film Stills Exhibition”, the first exhibition of the "Rewind Macao" series, Cinematheque.Passion once again collaborates with local photographer Akimoto Chan. This time, we step behind the silver screen and camera to focus on the "unseen" landscapes. We invite you to witness the other side of cinema hidden behind the camera: the exhaustion, focus, smiles, sunlight, rain, and all those moments within the interplay of light and shadow.
"Rewind " and "Fast Forward" are two important buttons when playing films on the recorder. Inspired by this, two series of short-term exhibitions are organized in the exhibition hall on the 3rd floor here in Cinematheque・Passion, named "Rewind Macao" and "Looking Forward". The former focuses on local themes, while the latter draws inspiration from avant-garde works from other places. They complement each other and are closely related, which symbolize ‘stand in Macao’ and ‘look at the world’.
Introduction of the Photographer
Akimoto Chan
Known to Macao peers as "Ah Pao" (Cantonese Pronunciation, means: Leopard). Since becoming a photographer, “Akimoto” officially represents his photographer's avatar, and the name pays homage to his inspired Japanese photographers.
When Chan was in middle school, he began to shoot randomly around, then he turned to read and study many photography books and attend different exhibitions during his university days in Guangzhou, sowed the seeds of interest in photography. In 2015 to 2016, the opportunity to shoot stills for the film Macao Stories 3: City Maze and Sisterhood was ushered in - and since then, his identity as a still photographer has truly been recognized. He subsequently worked as a still photographer on films including Madalena, I Want to Be a Plastic Chair, Girlfriends and Ballad of a Small Player.
From working in a small crew on independent short films, to then involved in the over-sea production with hundreds of people, Chan has been through the era of using the special sound extinguishing boxes, to later the introduction of silent shutters. He has been engaged in his profession for more than ten years.
